Family Members can Visit Canada from the USA Effective June 9, 2020

On March 20th, 2020, the Canada-U.S. border was closed to non-essential travel to limit the spread of COVID-19 and is expected to continue until at least June 20. Non-citizens are able to cross the border if their purpose in Canada is deemed essential. However, today, Monday, June 8, 2020, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that effective tomorrow, June 9, 2020, immediate family members of Canadians are welcome to cross the Canada-U.S. border to visit their relatives.

Self-isolate for a minimum of 14 days is still mandatory and the visitor must not have symptoms of COVID-19. There is a condition related to length of the visit as it must be 15 days or longer. Currently, this exemption for non-essential travel only applies to family of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

By immediate family member we mean spouse or common-law partner, dependent children (under the age of 22), parents or step-parents, and guardian or tutor.
